Kelley To: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <f2db6a86f6dd487baa499e2e7d1a7...@derekpc> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" I have been searching without success for many months for a map by early Oregon booster Hall Jackson Kelley generally referred to as a map of the Territory of Oregon and High California, though there is no actual title on the map; these terms do appear prominently on the map. This map has been reproduced in a few places but none of the reproductions are of very high quality. The annotation at the bottom of the map reproduction in Fred Wilbur Powell's Hall J. Kelley on Oregon says it was "Recd. at Dept. of State with J. R. Poinsett's June 26th, 1829"; this is almost certainly a typo for 1839, since it was received at the War Department and this is when Joel Poinsett was Secretary of War, I think. This is the map that attempted to rename the Cascade Mountains the President's Range and assigned President's names to various mountains. Mt Adams is the only one that remains, and that in a different position to that given by Kelley (it was named on the 1853 Pacific Railroad Survey map). Since it was sent to the War Department one would think it would be in the US National Archives or the Library of Congress. I wondered if anyone knew the location and reference for the original of this map? Thanks for any help. Some additional info: Kelley, Hall Jackson 1790-1874. A History of the Settlement of Oregon and the Interior of Upper California and Letters and Documents, 1832-1842. In: Powell, Fred Wilbur. Hall J. Kelley on Oregon. Princeton, N. J.: Princeton University Press, 1932. pp. 218-403. Book contains a reproduction of Kelley's 1839 manuscript map of his route past the Mount Shasta region (facing p. 403). The map was derived from his 1834-5 overland travel with Ewing Young (and in part with Michel Laframboise) from Monterey over the Siskiyous to the Columbia River. Kelley is generally acknowledged to be the first to assign the name of "Mt. Jackson" to present-day Mt. Shasta. Kelley called all of the Cascade Range the "President's Range" and named most of the peaks after U.S. Presidents. The map shows the upper Sacramento as "Pierre's R.", and shows the main Sacramento as "Kelly's R." Also note that the trail Kelley followed goes by the east side of Mt. Shasta.
