Dear Mr. Lancaster, George H. Beans had two notable collections of maps and atlases, both of which were catalogued. When he decided to dispose of his collections, the University of British Columbia acquired the Japanese collection (maps of the Tokugawa Era, ca.1600-1867). I understand that the Italian collection was much larger, and was catalogued in four large volumes. The collection was broken up in a large auction. I was unaware of the Italian collection until I tried to locate Mr. Beans in order to fill in information about the man and his Japanese maps, and to resolve questions that had arisen from the published catalogue. Is there any information in the Kraus Archives, wherever they are? Or any of the antiquarian map dealers from that period? Mr. Nebenzahl in Chicago did his best to assist me. The Library of Congress does not list either of Beans' catalogues. I hope that someone on the list can help you further. If anyone can provide further information on the Japanese collection. Beans (and previously in the Austrian National Library, apparently sold as a duplicate sometime after 1920). It is now in the collection of the Mortimer Rare Book Room at Smith College (Northampton, Massachusetts), acquired from H. P. Kraus, who acquired it from Beans. There is a pencil note on the front free endpaper "GHB 295" - I imagine this is Beans's note, and that it refers to some sort of catalogue of his collection. I would be grateful for any information that could lead me to further information about such a catalogue. P.S.
