Dear Mr. Lancaster, You might try contacting The John Carter Brown Library at Brown University in Providence. They received a fairly large percentage of Beans's Italian maps as a gift. I quote from Raleigh Ashlin Skelton's Maps, a Historical Survey of Their Study and Collecting. Illustrated Edition (Chicago, 1972), at p. 55, in note 45: "The John Carter Brown Library acquired thoe maps from the Beans collection that fell within their collecting policy. See "the George H. Beans Gift of Maps and Geographical Treatises," Brown University, John Carter Brown Library, Report, 1957, pp. 14-33, and subsequent reports describing additions: 1958, pp. 46-59; 1959, pp. 33-39; 1960, pp. 31-33; and 1960-65, p. 45. The remainder of the collection was sold to antiquarian book dealers and dispersed." So it would appear that it was only the JCB which obtained a sizable portion of the Italian maps in Beans's collection, although I have heard, though cannot give you documentation, that the University of Philadelphia also acquired some from him, apparently also as a gift. Thus the JCB is perhaps the most likely source of further information on Beans's Italian maps. Perhaps they will know, too, about the two catalogs mentioned by Frances Woodward in her reply, which quite astounded me. I didn't know that these catalogs existed. Best Doug Douglas W. Beans (and previously in the Austrian National Library, apparently sold as a duplicate sometime after 1920). It is now in the collection of the Mortimer Rare Book Room at Smith College (Northampton, Massachusetts), acquired from H. P. Kraus, who acquired it from Beans. There is a pencil note on the front free endpaper "GHB 295" - I imagine this is Beans's note, and that it refers to some sort of catalogue of his collection. I would be grateful for any information that could lead me to further information about such a catalogue. P.S.
