My PhD was on the connection between place and identity in the Carib
Territory on Dominica, with a chapter discussing the area's first depiction
on the Byres survey, and the relationship between the Byres map and the
Jeffreys and Sayer maps of the island. I mostly worked from maps in the
British Library collection and certainly recommend having a look there.
The National Archives at Kew, as already suggested, has a lot of material
such as records and correspondence from plantations, and documents relating
to the island's land sale. Such as:
Land Commissioner's reports & registers 1764-1797 - CO 106/9-12
Land Commissioner's report 1770 - CO 76/9
My research also found several boxes of correspondence from settlers and
land owners to the island's administration complaining about their rent,
repayments and survey errors. If I remember correctly, these are listed in
the catalogue by the first few correspondents in the box, so there's more
than suggested by the catalogue title: T1/529/96; T1/529/207;
T1/529/188-191; T1/529/172-174; T1/529/145-148; T1/529/138-142, 149,
153-159, 161-171, 178-183; T1/529/94-95, 192-193, 234-235.
You could also try contacting Lennox Honychurch, the island's primary
historian. He has an extensive collection of historic documents and
knowledge about the island. He also mentioned to me, when I was on Dominica
in 2003, that he thought someone on St Vincent was doing some research into
the Byres survey. I didn't follow it up at the time.

Have you checked (if so, tell us!)? Some Danish material will be found,
unless I'm mistaken, sourced - and reproduced - in the PhD and several

The Library of Congress has at least one fairly large scale and detailed map
of St. Croix from the eighteenth century. It is a Danish map of 1754 by Jens
M. Beck. It is described in our (co-authored with John Hebert)
carto-bibliography entitled the "Luso-Hispanic World in Maps...", which is
available online at

There is a zoom feature that allows you to zoom in and magnify some of the
maps listed in the carto-bibliography including this one which is no. 980.
The map shows, among other things, individual landholding with what appear
to be the names of landholders. It is an interesting map as it is printed
with many added notes in pen and ink. If you have further questions, you may
