Hi Julie, I'd be in favor of preserving the state numbering used by the compilers of standard cartobibliographies. Since Glen McLaughlin used State 1, State 2, etc. in _The Mapping of California as an Island_, wouldn't it be better to preserve that convention? Some MARC records already contain his State 1, 2 etc. numbering citations. Confusion could result if you now switched to dates. You might have to use numbering like State 0.5, State 1.3, etc. to fit in newly added items.
