Hi! I assume the convention used by county cartobibliographers in Great Britain of putting dates in brackets which are unsubstantiated cannot be used as "sort" procedures cannot put 1999, (1999), 2000 in the correct order??: Adding letters will always be problematic. Say I have a 2000a (Jan) and a 2000b (June) state (although a new printing run would be just as inconvenient) where do I later add 2000 February? In essence, this is guessing the publication date. The convention would be to add a question mark to your date, so 1789?, or if you only new the decade 1780? I suppose if you had multiple states from the same decade, you'd need to start adding letters: 1780a?, 1780b?, etc. If you discovered a specific date later on, you could always change the date from 1780b? to 1799. If you do decide to update these, however, you'll probably need to find a way of linking the two dates so that if someone knew the map as state 1780b? they'd be able to find it as 1799.
