I think this is a significant point, since subsequent major
cartobibliographies, including Philip Burden's work, also refer back to
McLaughlin's entries. I would also wonder about the group working on
DCRM(C) [Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials--Cartographic;
http://dcrmc.pbworks.com/w/page/34637799/General-Information] starting
to address a more systematic way of dealing with some of the problems
already mentioned. This would certainly take some time and likely not be
of significant help to the project being discussed here. Also, there may
be some intractable differences between rare map catalogers and those
responsible for publishing varied major cartobibliographies. Progress on
the project at hand might contribute to some solutions.
