Neil, The first place to search for the existence of auction catalogues is SCIPIO. This is an online database provided by OCLC. You need a subscription, but any major library should be able to provide access to it. SCIPIO gives citations of art auction and rare book catalogues dating from late sixteenth century to future auctions. Secondly, as an employee of Christie's, I can tell you that here at King Street in London we have a very comprehensive archive of our own catalogues with prices realised. Enquiries should be addressed to Lynda McLeod, our archivist. As to Sotheby's, it is my understanding (although this may well be wrong) that they do not have any records at Bond St. at all. Instead, you have to go to the Manuscripts section at the British Library to look up any of their records. Incidentally, although not New York based, BL Manuscripts also have Hodgson's ledgers, and their marked up catalogues are in Rare Books.
