Mr. van den Brink,
I fully agree with your statement that "The charm of our discipline is
that we focus on what connects, rather than what distinguishes us".
The issue you rise is, I am afraid, a misunderstanding: The ICA
Commission on Digital Technologies in Cartographic Heritage is
organizing a Tutorial, as a ICC pre-conference event in Paris,
according to the Commission's specific Terms of Reference. It is not a
Workshop (this was held in The Hague).
The subject of the Tutorial is a technical issue, the 3D scanning of
curved (spherical) and deformed cartographic surfaces and has nothing
to do with History. It is a whole day long, very focused and dense
Tutorial to be held in a date and place specified by the LOC of the ICC.
So, what you, maybe, are implying, by talking about the, presumable.
diversity of what I am saying (in The Hague) and what I am doing (in
Paris) is far beyond my practice and understanding!
In any case, since I believe that our dialogue is of no further
interest for the MapHisters, I will be glad to meet you in Paris
during the week of the ICC and to discuss the issue.

The charm of our discipline is that we focus on what connects, rather than
what distinguishes us. Exempli gratia, if there was one lasting impression
from last weeks conference, it was the confirmation of your own viewpoint
(as posed during your introduction on Thursday) that the fruitfull
interacting and exchange of ideas would bring the older (analog) and
younger (digital) generations within the field closer together.
I do understand (given the strict frame provided by the Organising
Committee) that choises have to be made, but by planning your tutorial
PARALLEL to the meeting of the Commission, you distance yourselve (in my
opinion) from the inspiring principle you inducted just last week?
Why not bring together the generations in one session yet again? Was the
possibility of one history-session ever discussed?
