For some of the history preceding Ptolemy (and Strabo), based on the
earlier post pertaining to Evans' book, see http://tinyurl.com/3ueoeab ,
then click on the notes for page 62. Evans indicates that the origins
predate Ptolemy, and that various authors (all predicated on Greek
astronomy) historically indicated 5-7 zones, for various reasons. The
earliest author cited was Polybius during the 3d century B.C.
