I am map collector. I was shown an atlas which is said to be a manuscript copy of the 1571 atlas of Portugese map maker Fernao Vaz Dourado. I had the chance to compare 2 maps of this atlas with photo facsimile prints of the original atlas and noticed differences in detail and portolan lines. The library stamp on the original is also not present on this one. It is evident that it is not a photo facsimile. I have no means to identify if this is hand drawn or if it is some sort of print The atlas is bound in Burgundy leather with title "Fernao Vaz Dourado" and what looks like a coat of arms in gilt. Dim 35x53 cm Excellent condition Contains 21 folio double-pages (16 maps, 1 cosmic information page and 2 pages of coordinate lists) On verso of 1st page following is stamped: Papel Goatskin Parchment Creme Armeis & Moreno, L. Da - Gravadores Sociedade Astoria, L. Da - Impressores On verso of another page is a logo and "PORTO, MARCO 1948 SUBSIADO PELO INSTITUTO PARA A ALTA CULTURA" stampted or printed. On title page: Atlas de Fernão Vaz Dourado. Reproducao fidelissima do exemplar da Torre do Tombo, datado de Goa, 1571. Publicado por iniciativa e sob a direccao do Visconde de Lagoa, a expensas da Livraria Civilizacao - Editora. On 2nd title page there is the date 1946 and the name Alfredo Candido. Maps have no date or name of maker. I am curious to know if there is a publication as described above and if this could really be a one of manuscript copy.
