Kit,
This is not a definitive answer, but there is no record of Jefferson
owning your pictured style of odometer in Susan Stein's section on
scientific instruments in her book, _The World's of Thomas Jefferson at
Monticello_ (NY: Harry N. Abrams, 1993, pp. 175, 362-3). Stein's text
and some added information is posted online:
<http://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/odometer> . The
odometer purchased by Jefferson in 1794 from David Rittenhouse (pictured
at site) did have the capacity to be mounted on a carriage.
There is a bit more discussion of the one you pictured below at this
site: <http://www.benfranklin300.org/frankliniana/result.php?id=170&sec=1> .
Best, Joel

Hi!
Can anyone help me identify the source of the inscription on this
photo taken from a web blog and accessed via google pictures:
The odometer is depicted on a number of sites but I have only found it
with the additional text - /Here is the odometer he gave to Thomas
Jefferson -/ on an obscure blogsite. Does anyone know if the
inscription is true or where the original information came from?
[Franklin + odometer = 3 views of same but no text]
[Jefferson + odometer = 3 views of same, one with this text]
[Image comes from pigtown-design.blogspot.com
<http://pigtown-design.blogspot.com/2009/07/maira-kalman-benjamin-franklin.html> but
no indication of source and I suspect a dead end.]
Many thanks
Kit
