To Joel and others I have already referred to the odometer pages on both Jefferson and Franklin: there is no reference there. My puzzle is where did the original picture with text come from which I included in my email? The odometer pictured at _<http://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/odometer>_ (http://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/odometer) . is shown as an odometer but has a clock face. I am intrigued how it showed distance unless you were travelling at a predetermined speed - but this is not my question. _http://www.benfranklin300.org/frankliniana/result.php?id=170&sec=1_ (http://www.benfranklin300.org/frankliniana/result.php?id=170&sec=1) > .shows "my" odometer and the dials clearly show its use. But the image at the web-blog has the additional claim that is my real focus of interest. Thanks for all replies, on or off MapHist.
