Why is it not possible to place printer and page layout information to the
place where it belongs to: the document to be printed. And this would
certainly be the layout itself.
To dump everything, which has to be recovered later, in a workspace file, is
in my opinion not a good concept, it is rather weak, error prone
architecture. The description of each layout should be stored in a separate
file, either binary or text format. In a workspace there could be just a
reference to such layout files (which should be ignored if the layout file
cannot be found).
I am not sure why software evolution at MapInfo works always in the way of
adding a bit more to the already overloaded workspace concept. Where are the
new ideas ? These incremental updates provide new features, which the user
community required for a long time. Then, when you learn about the details
of the new features, you quickly see how limited they are, and how
(apparently) simple they are just dropped into the workspaces.
How happy was I when I saw the new legend feature, for example, and how
great was my disappointment, when I saw how limited the configuration
possibilities were. I.e. I could not change the sequence of items, could not
insert my own headings at any point, in short could not use the feature for
my map production. The introduction of reports in MapInfo 4.5 provided
similar things: trying the feature with great expectations, and dropping it
completely when recognizing that you could not change the font, the size of
the field controls.
Still, I really like MapInfo much over ArcView (which is crippled even
more), but I would like to ask the MapInfo development team to provide us
more thoughtful and well designed innovations, instead of fast-made
improvisations (for which the numerous Mapbasic add-ons are also an
indication).
Just my comments....

Subject: Re: MI 5.5 Printing again.
Each workspace created by MI 5.5 imbeds the printer, orientation and number
of copies in the workspace text file. "Best way to fix" right know is to
use
a text editor and delete all that crap out of your workspace - This is an
improvement from MI????? - and then you can establish printer, orientation
and quantities for any printer just like you could in the old versions of
MI.
Perhaps the best solution is for MI to ask us if we want all of this printer
default crap saved in our workspace at the point of saving....????
I have created workspaces in 5.0 that have upwards of 35 layouts using
various paper sizes, orientations and such and this new version is a real
pain in the %^&!@###.
