Many thanks to all who responded. Editing the MIF file worked great. I now 
remember seeing this problem before on the list and another hint was to 
export a dummy mif file with the projection you want and cut and paste the 
coordinate line into your file.

Hi Tim,

You could export the table out as MID/MIF format, then edit the header
of the MIF file to put in the correct projection parameters.  Another
approach would be to export the table as DXF, then using Table > Import,
specify the projection and any coordinate transform if needed.  Note
that this 2nd method loses any attributes you may have attached to the
linework.
