You can look at the site of the US Geological survey.
http://edc.usgs.gov/doc/edchome/ndcdb/ndcdb.html . Here you can download
1:250,000 DEM files of most of the US (I am sure Texas will be there
somewhere :) ). You can use Mapinfo's DEM to Grid converter to convert the
data into a MapInfo Grid.

You can use mapinfo to thematically color the differences in elevation and
to apply hillshading. You can also GridContour ( download at
www.mercatorgeo.nl ) to create contour lines and surfaces from thes grids.
