You can download digital elevation models of most of the US at the US
geological survey site.
http://edc.usgs.gov/glis/hyper/guide/1_dgr_demfig/index1m.html Select the
region you want and download the (compressed) data. Use Mapinfos DEM to Grid
converter to convert the data to a MapInfo Grid map.

The resulting map is in effect a raster image but one that can be colored
thematicaly and by hill shading. You can also create elevation contour maps
by using GridContour (download at www.mercatorgeo.nl).
