Chris,

For me this is a great limitation because I would like to select elements of
my layer AND to visualize the layer with custom symbology, which is not
possible in MapInfo. Another question is to use a thematic map to visualize
data as a result of some analysis. But in my project symbolization is the
way we VISUALIZE our data BEFORE analysis (its a matter of Visualization).
In ArcView, for example you dont have this limitation (you can define
symbology for a layer and you can work with the layer as with any other
layer).

Miguel,

I think this is not a limitation in MapInfo! As the symbology is set up when
you create the thematic map, ie. the symbols are based on some data in your
table, the way to change a symbol is change that data, which makes sense to
me. If you want to change the setup of the thematic map (eg. change all
points which have an attribute of "Airport" to a plane, then you must modify
the thematic settings. You can access this under the Map... menu item.

Thanks very much to Erin Rubio, Russell Mincher, Brendan Henry and Jason
Adam.

The consensus is that it is impossible to select elements of a thematic
layer, you must use instead the underlying original layer.

This means that you cant work with the symbology you defined in a thematic
layer.
I would like to define symbology for a layer and work (select,...) with it,
but I must disable the visibility of the thematic layer and enable the
selectable option of the original layer for selecting and see the selection
in the map, which means I must use the original symbology of the layer for
work with it (and can' t use my symbology).

I think this is an important limitation of MapInfo (others GISes dont
have it). (Are you there MapInfo Staff?, in ArcView you dont have this
limitation!!).
