Good questions, Steve. MI Pro 6.0 will not give you any problems or issues
on Win 2000 IF you install and run with full administrative rights. We
tested that configuration as part of 6.0 testing. We required administrator
access right in Windows NT. However, we did note that without those rights
(which Windows 2000 uses more as a default and therefore is more common)
there are problems as you mentioned. They all revolve around lack of access
rights to the registry and/or system files/folders.
The next version of Pro (which will be in beta soon) has tried to address
these issues and we will be certifying the product with Microsoft's Windows
2000 program. What we have come up with so far has some far reaching
consequences for which we will appreciate your beta test feedback. However,
the basic solution will be:
1) You will still need Administrator rights to install the product. There
seems to be no away around this. Creating the OLE/COM registry entries and
using the Windows installer seems to require this.
2) You will be able to run as a non-administrator without errors.
Information that in previous versions of Pro was stored on a global
(machine) basis will now be stored per user and will be stored in places
that are not privileged. So, MapInfow.WOR and MapInfow.PRF will no longer
be in the Windows directory.
When the Beta is released there will be much more information on the
details. I expect that there may be problems with MapBasic applications
that hard coded knowledge of where files existed may also have problems.
Thanks again for your feedback.

Has anyone else had these problems with the new "NT" operating system?
* Installation gives several error messages about not being able to
initialize the uninstaller.
* Preferences do not get stored.
* Tools listing is blank, and any additions to Tools disappear.
Thanks,
