Thanks to all those who provided tips on this one. Here are the answers I
received and a couple of thoughts.

Using some simple maths to calculate the appropriate size of the map window
is one method - EG if your layout frame is 23cm wide and you want your map
to be at 1:50000, the width of the map window needs to be 50000 X 23 cm wide
= 1150000cm or 11.5km wide

....or for those working in inches / miles

((Frame width in inches * scale)/12)/5280 = Map zoom in miles

Another method is to draw rectangles and use them as a mask as follows:

Make a solid rectangle object big enough so its borders are outside your
printable area. Make another one the size you want your frame and cut a
hole in the first where you want to see your map.

Place the constructed mask in front of the frame with the map in . The map
can then be moved around and have its scale changed without its "apparent"
frame moving. So for printing and appearance purposes you have what you
want. Other map components can sit in front of this mask.

In a layout you can have multiple frames displaying the same map window at
different scales. Therefore to have MapInfo automatically re-size / re-zoom
the map window to give the correct map scale in a fixed size frame would be
a challenge as each of the frames would require the map window to be a
different size. It would be a neat feature if you could create a 'locked
clone' of a map window so that one 'locked frame' could be created from it
in a layout. You could then have MapInfo auto-resize the 'locked clone' and
set the appropriate zoom level to give the correct scale in the
corresponding 'locked frame'. Does that make sense?

Subject: MI-L Fixing size of layout frames

Hi all,

When you change the Scale on Paper setting for a layout Frame object, the
size of the Frame changes because it represents the contents of the map
window it is based on, right?

What I want to do is fix the size and position of a layout frame but still
be able to control the scale on the paper. This would therefore mean that
the zoom ratio of the map window would have to change.

Does anyone know of a way to do this? Possibly a MapBasic solution?

Any help appreciated.

Richard
