I met you at a MapInfo day in Birmingham (UK) last year and was =
impressed with, what seemed to me, your dedication to the MI Pro =
product. However, I think you're missing the point. The people who use =
and help each other out via the MapInfo-L site are probably also the =
same people who work for these 'corporate customers' you mention and =
therefore the things we would like to include in MI are the one's that =
would help those corporate customers achieve bigger and better things.
You will see from the repeated requests that what the users want are =
generally small but very meaningful functions that would help in =
efficiency and therefore the profitability of the corporates.
MI has a huge user base in the local government market in the UK and at =
the meeting mentioned above (which was attended by over 100 =
representatives) you asked the question as to who used Lat/Lon and who =
used BNG as a default. The result was that 100% used BNG and there was =
an expectation that, that showing might trigger some change for us or =
provide some movement to being able to set the default projection so we =
wouldn't have to run the 'set projection' code every time we updated our =
X & Y columns because they always get populated with Lat/Lon and of =
course we always forget that this is going to happen. It is a small =
request and one which I would imagine would take little re-engineering =
of MI. I have been using MI since V3.1 and users in the UK have been =
asking for this for years (not just members of this forum).
Another example. How many years has it taken for you to realise that the =
user's wanted the default in the 'View Entire Layer' dialog to be 'All =
Layers'?
How do you test your change strategies? Who do you contact or consult =
about what is to be included in a new release? What constitutes best =
value for you? I don't know about the first two but the answer to the =
last question I suspect would be profits v development costs. None of =
us could disagree with this, as a business you must make a profit or go =
under but there are an awful lot of us who have been waiting for many =
years for some basic functionality, irrespective of which country we =
operate from, which would make the MI Pro. product an awful lot better =
and common tasks an awful lot easier and therefore the productivity of =
your favoured 'corporate customers' a lot higher.
Never, never forget, that the 'users' are the one's who know what is =
needed and are the one's that recommend your product/s in the corporate =
environment.
My regards.
Mark Percival
