Dave, I can't point you to a specific resource to help in your
investigation, but I can give you some wisdom I acquired over time.
1) You cannot buy a server that is future proof. It is already obsolete by
the time that it arrives at your door. What you can do is delay the
inevitable (see below).
2) Memory, memory, memory, memory. You can NEVER have enough memory. If the
server you are looking at allows up to 1 gig of memory, make sure that is
how much you put in it. This will help you to get the best performance out
of the machine and save you from having to do upgrades as your user base
expands.
3) This is GIS. Get as much hard drive storage as possible while still
maintaining a redundant storage system. However much hard drive space you
have available, you will use it. (see #2)
4) If you have to cut corners due to monetary concerns, cut the MHz of the
CPU rather than hard drive space or memory.

I am new to this list. I am currently researching a Server to host our GIS
data.
WE wish to have a server which is future proof and cope with the demands of
increased GIS use. Currently we have six users but this is planned to
increase significantly (hence this investigation) and we plan to host web
pages with MapXtreme.
Are there any recommended specifications for this? Does anyone have any
useful links or research they are willing to share?
