Andrew: I've had very good success recently having the Layout Window active, and doing
a "save window as" then increasing the image size (from a width of approx 9" to 30")
then selecting a format of "Windows Metafile (.WMF). In MSWord, "Insert", "Picture",
"From File", then resize and place as needed on the page.
The results are not always WYSIWYG, so you may have to, several times, adjust the
positions, sizes, fonts, colors, etc., of the original objects in your MapInfo .TAB
layers and Layout before you export the Layout, to get what you want in the MSWord
document. Once you get the map to print from MSWord and look like what you want, the
inserted image can be cut-and-pasted into any other MSWord document; and can be easily
turned into a PDF, and even inserted into Quark.
The translation to PDF sometimes causes some WYSIWYG problems, too, though usually
only problems recognizing fonts and text sizes, and, almost always, slightly darkening
colors and shades.
It's a pain having to look at a printout (or screen displays) of a PDF or MSWord
document, then try to guess at what you need to change in the MapInfo .TAB file to get
what you want, but this "workaround" produces the best, clearest results for me, to
date.
Another great advantage is the file size. I used to produce huge .TIF files to get an
image resolution that was only barely adequate. My maps often contain lots of small
text, labels and intricate line and color work. The .WMFs, .DOCs and PDFs I produce
now are a small fraction of the size of a .TIF produced from the same MapInfo Layout,
and better resolution
