My standard procedure for maps useable in Word docs is to make the map in
the map window, with labels, scaler etc in the cosmetic layer, and save as
a wmf.
This is then inserted into the Word document- either to print out as a quite
acceptable bromide on photographic paper, or to print as part of a document.
It sometimes helps to enlarge the wmf slightly when you insert it in Word.
There are some sample maps in a couple of archaeological papers I wrote in
Word and then converted to pdf if you'd like to get an idea of the quality-
the trick with pdf docs, of course, is to make sure you include all the
fonts used in the wmf in the pdf document. As the samples show, rotated text
does not always seem happy in a pdf conversion, but that's another question!
