If you think of a ladder in a pair of tights they normally run lengthways
down the leg.  Visualising this (steady lads) the ladder will be a long scar
in the material so think of longitude as a ladder in tights (or do I not get
out enough?)! 

On the point of Port or Starboard, Port is on the left and both have 4
letters - simple forget Vikings, longships and which way you sail out of or
into port, keep it simple.
