I finally received the light (red, green?) when I realized that in England you steer on the right side because you drive on the left. England indeed has a very deep maritime past and will not budge until they realize that all the images they got from the Viking boats were in fact mirrored images and that their history must be rewritten.
Funny how this double expression has so many explanations, and that in different languages: in French, babord (left side, beginning left of the word batterie) and tribord, (right side, ending right to the of the same word with some alliteration).
