I have had difficulty in the past doing this - I was trying to download points and tracklogs from a Garmin GPS 12. Much of the commercially available software for this is virtually useless.
The best product I came across was GPS Trackmaker - http://www.gpstm.com/ - Worked first time, and it's free for non-commercial purposes.
