Garmin has a proprietary software , I purchased years ago and it was DOS,
they have probably upgraded it, but it is very helpful, if not necessary,
cost about $100. If you have a little extra cash be sure to order the cable
that has both Data and Power, so you can go mobile with a laptop and not eat
up batteries. The software also allows you to use computer to manage
waypoints and name them. A DXF output that you will use to import into GIS,
and the ability to combine tracks and points from different files into one
(append).

Subject: MI-L GPS data download

I have had difficulty in the past doing this - I was trying to download
points and tracklogs from a Garmin GPS 12. Much of the commercially
available software for this is virtually useless.

The best product I came across was GPS Trackmaker - http://www.gpstm.com/
- Worked first time, and it's free for non-commercial purposes.
