JPG is made to compress photo-relistic scence, therefore it usually uses 
millions of colours.

To fiddle around with and convert between different hrafic formats, if 
found XN view to be  a nice program.
The URL is http://www.xnview.com , it is freeware and you can even run 
batch jobs, ie convert a whole stack of images.

btw: it is also handy for digital photography, as it can rotate jpgs 
without lost of quality.
