I had a similar problem when I was printing maps with large raster
backgrounds to pdf files.  I eventually found a work around but I needed to
keep a fairly high dpi in order to preserve the quality of the raster image.

Do you know what determines an "acceptable" dpi - is it memory or is it
something in Acrobat that cannot be changed?
