I don't know if MapInfo are planning to improve the MapBasic interface (they need too) but I know that others have produced their own solutions (like Microolap's MBBuilder http://www.microolap.com/gis/mb.htm. This seems to be the way with MapInfo - they provide the bare bones and then let others add/enhance it further.
