I may be way off base, but......
The title of version 6.0 appendix H is "Creating your own Coordinate system". Says nothing about creating your own projection, which is a mathematical equation and is built into Mapinfo. Nowhere in that appendix does it ever mention creating a new projection, but rather, just creating a new coordinate system. NOT the same thing, as I said earlier.
Page 567 then lists the 27 projections they are able to support in version 6.0. When you added your line in the PRJ file, did you use one of those 27 numbers? If so (and I suspect you had to in order for it to work in version 6), you did NOT add another projection, you just changed parameters. Datums, origins, false eastings or northings, standard parallels can all be changed, but that still doesn't alter the basic mathematics which define a projection.
