It is sad...if we can't do anything about it, I may have to remove myself
from the list in order to avoid the crap emails.
I truly doubt that will do you any good. Bill Thoen has investigated this and I have investigated it because the issue has also been raised on the lists I run at Directions Magazine. It is very unlikely someone is harvesting e-mail addresses from the DirectionsMag archives. (They would have to write special code to unmangle the e-mail addresses, which are automatically disguised.) It may be that someone else is archiving messages and perhaps a spammer is collecting addresses from there. That, clearly, is totally beyond the control of any listserver. So what you are saying is that you find the risk of posting *anything* on *any* public forum to be so high that you are going to disconnect yourself from the world, period. We would miss you.

With so many simple, cheap, and effective solutions out there--the 2/25/2003 issue of PC Magazine reviews 26 of them--you can easily and quickly solve this problem and continue to participate in public forums.

For example, I started using ChoiceMail last year because I was receiving 200 spams a day, minimum. (I have received everything there is out there, including a multimillion dollar proposal from every last Nigerian having access to a computer. It must be a very wealthy country. :-) After spending an hour configuring the software (exporting whitelists from my e-mail software was the biggest task) and another hour or so over the next week tweaking it, my spam rate is down to one or two a week, and those are from "trusted" vendors (like McAfee). The rest has absolutely vanished. In the meantime I migrated to a new computer and the whole system copied over without a hitch.

Cheers,
Bill Huber
