I just checked the last 288 spams I've received, and I see no
bailey_damion in them. So he's just picking on you it looks like. I don't
know where spammers get the names they use, but I doubt it's from
MapInfo-L archives at Directions Magazine.

It's possible the spammer has subscribed and is nicking addresses from the
postings, but since that involves actual work, I doubt they would go to
such trouble. There is a possibility they can be harvested from MapInfo
Corp's public web-based archives, but you have to register with MapInfo to
get access there, and again I think that will prove to be too much bother
for them. My guess is that bailey_damion found you elsewhere.

The only way to stop spam is to build and use better filters. I've got my
own Linux server, so I can block any address I want, but for everyone with
just mail client software, there are several choices for filtering
software out there; some of it free. I'm building my own just for grins
trying the Bayesian approach described by Paul Graham (see A Plan for Spam
http://www.paulgraham.com/antispam.html)

I believe there will be no effective laws passed to stop spam, and only
the most egregious examples can be filtered out by Internet backbone level
filters. Even among end users, there's differences over what's spam to
them. So in the end, you'll need to defend your own castle with custom
trained filters. I suggest that people check around and get one while
they're free. Spam isn't going away soon.
