Make sure that all your points are located in the same area, eg. That there
isn't any points at for instance (0,0). This will mean that Vertical Mapper
will have to create a very large grid, and I guess that not even 1.3 GB ram
is enough !

But to answer your question: I have not stumpled into a maximum number of
points
