Thats a bummer it can't be done that way, would of made life so much
simpler!

The tables are for the most part similar, but some do have different
fields so i couldn't append them together.

Is it possible to change from SELECT *
                                              FROM VALVES

To SELECT ASSET_ID
     FROM VALVES

and repeat this and then append the four results tables together, would
this mean there would just be one field in the results table so they
could append?

I am simply trying to make a tool to be able to locate an item with a
certain asset id, rather than recover the information about a particular
asset, so i'd only need to have the asset id displayed. Although would i
need the obj column as well if i wanted to go on and find the
selection?

Sorry to be a pest, but as you can no doubt tell, i'm just starting to
learn mapbasic and sql :p

Thanks

Jonathan

You will have to either:

1) Search the 4 tables one-by-one and also get 4 individual result
tables. These 4 results you could store in a single table by doing
some
append. Watch out that the fields in the tables match!

2) Store all objects in the same single table and do your search
there.
This also require that the fields matches between the tables.

What you are trying to do is beyond the nature of SQL. You may like to
learn more about SQL. Lots of information is available through Google,
so this is just one link:
