Hendrik You have got a very large data processing task. But if you have doen it in ArcView, do you need to do it again - can't you save the results to a SHP file and then import it to TAB with the Universal Translator? Importing will create the spatial indexes in TAB for you.
MapInfo is very efficient for spatial queries - as Bob Young often points out, TAB is a great strength of the product - but pretty hopeless on text searching by comparison. For example, text searching operations such as yours, or a gazetteer etc I would shunt out to a database. If you have MapBasic, loop the table and copy the rows you want to keep into a new table - ensure it has no indexes - set fastedit on for the new table. Set it OFF when you're finished. If you don't have MapBasic - try doing a series of spatial selects (within a range of x,y values for example) to break your big dataset up into smaller areas - say of the order 100k rows each max. Save a copy of each subselection - perform your subquery on each - and save the results away to a new table. Even if you don't have MapBasic you can open the MapBasic window and copy the commands you carry out, adjust the parameters, and paste them back in - or put them in a workspace. I have a roadnet table for Germany consisting of 6 Million rows. 2 millon rows have no entry concering the Street name. (blank) I want to delete these Records. My tests: 1. Try to delete when Name ="" ---- no answer after 2 hours, 4 hours. 2. export to ACCESS make a field "Name_Filled" with [0;1] export to MI try to join nothing happens after 2 hours, 4 hours. 3. Same as 2 but I made 5 packages with 1 million rows saved them, opened the first, joined with the origin and update field "Name_Filled" Do this for all packages. Now I got the info name Filled for all 6 million rows. Indicate the field "Name_Filled" and try to delete where Name_Filled =0 nothing happend after 2 , 4 , 6 hours. This is annoying! Does anybody know what I can do? I am using MI 7.0 on a 1GHZ and 512 MB RAM PC with WINNT 4.0 service Pack 6 Not really funny is the following: -e.g. tried the same on an equivalent PC with Arcview 3.2 -after 6 minutes I got the result.
