Hello,

Have a look at Manifold (http://www.manifold.net and
http://www.manifold.net/news/news_set.html) - Version 6.5 has just come
out.

This is actually cheap (USD245 to USD495, depending on whether you want
functions for routing, surface analysis or access to enterprise
databases) and doesn't have a 'special' exchange rate of USD1 = GBP1 for
the UK like with a lot of consumer goods... So currently it's GBP140 to
GBP280.

Bizarrely, it seems to have more features than MapInfo or ArcView (such
as a Map Server), certainly for the price...

It's gaining support at our company at the moment...

Cheers,
Matt

Subject: MI-L Reasonably Priced GIS/CAD Packages For A Small Business

Hello Listers,

Sorry to drift slightly off topic but I have been asked by a client for
advice on cheap, off the shelf fairly basic GIS software packages. My
client is a small planning consultancy and simply needs a package which
will allow him to import, display and do simple analysis on geographical
information compatible with most data formats in particular Ordnance
Survey products. Basically what he wants to do in his own words is:

"Open OS maps, draw a few lines and dots, and then put the resultant
maps in reports"

I have looked at and have experience with most of the main vendors but
would welcome any input from you all.

Thanks very much for your help.
