I remember hearing about "black box", since at least version of MI 7 if not earlier. It depends a lot on the versionsof MI, acrobat and individual settings. I didn't personnaly had any "copyright issues" mentionned by Lars but I vaguely remember some posts about it...

Most of the problems I've seen,  depend on the settings of the software used to create pdf. If not acrobat, one has at least to make sure to have one that has the fonts embedding options.

An easy way around if someone is not too familiar with acrobat setting is to simply create a PS file and transform it if one has acrobat or some other software... Ex: distiller vs pdf maker as an exemple.

Also, if you want to send the pdf file to someone, can you send also the font to the end user? if not embeded in the pdf, at least the user can open the file and when called upon, the font will show since it came from the fonts directory...

Hej both,

May it be a copyright issue ?

I remember someone here on the list complaining about newer versions of Acrobat refusing to include MapInfo symbol fonts due to them being (errornously?) copyrighted.

Yep, sounds like your printer's been curseed...

But seriously, what's different in your environment since this has
occurred? What software versions are you using? If you're using MI 8.5 I
think there's a new PDF driver that comes with it that you can install and
try. You might also try one of the free PDF drivers like PDFCreator or such
like.

I have hundreds of custom symbols, mostly highway symbols, that I
have been using for years without trouble. Lately I have been
getting black boxes when I print these to an Adobe printer or a PDF
file. They show up just fine on the screen. I have tried changing
the pallets and color depth for the bitmaps. I've changed all of the
Advanced printer settings. I even saved the whole map as a
registered tiff, had only the image open in the mapper and still got
black boxes when I printed to PDF (using pdf995).

 What's going on here?
