Actually, I think that an equivalent sort of operation IS available for ESRI products - see this page which is a walk-through or tutorial called Publishing Maps with ArcGIS Publisher.

I’m not sure what you want (? Is it just to decipher the MXD and identify the SHP or other “mapping” files referenced, so you can reconstruct it).

Have a look at the link above, anyway. Here’s a short extract / introduction:

Software: ArcGIS Desktop
Version: 9.x
Platform: PC

Publisher is an extension that can be purchased for any level of ArcGIS. It enables users to convert map documents (MXD) into a published map file (PMF). These PMFs can be viewed with a free downloadable ESRI software called ArcReader. The following exercise will show users how to create a PMF and how to view it in ArcReader. It will also utilize the new data packaging utility available in Publisher. This functionality is new to ArcGIS 9.X and makes map distribution a simpler process.

To successfully complete this exercise, ArcGIS 9.X, the Publisher extension and ArcReader are required.

Please click the following link to download the data required for this exercise.

If you’re collaborating with an ESRI client then the fact that the free ArcReader allows the PMF to be viewed may be of interest to you.

Subject: [MI-L] off topic-- mxd files

Does anyone know if one can "package" an ArcGIS mxd like one can

package a workspace in MapInfo?

Thanks,
