MapInfo is also cheaper in the USA. I saw a special offer on MapInfo 8.5 at
$999 which is less than the wholesale price we get from MapInfo UK as a
MapInfo dealer.

For ArcGIS it will always cost more than MapInfo - for example in MapInfo
the Universal Translator is included. In ArcGIS you have to buy this
separately. I suspect that ArcGIS with all the modules does a fair bit more
than MapInfo, but by that stage you will be looking at 6000 pounds versus
1095 pounds.

They all do as far as I can see from http://store.esri.com

Base ArcView is 1500 USD, each extension is 2500 USD. Prices valid for US
customers only. At least here in Denmark a base arcview license is minimum
double up these prices. Not sure about the extensions.
