Another Brit' on the -L... excellent. :-)

You'll find mapinfo-l a lot busier than arvciew-l and esri-l because they are run in 
much different 
ways. mapinfo-l is much more of a melting pot where many people reply back to the list 
so that the 
knowledge can be passed on. On the ESRI lists, people ask questions and then, if your 
lucky, you 
get a SUM: follow-up from the original author. It's much more dynamic and fluid here 
and, personally speaking, much more fun!.

You'll soon get used to MapInfo. Maybe 90% of functionality is the same or similar - 
just presented 
in a different way and with different nomenclature. e.g. MapInfo Pro layer = ArcView 
theme. Some 
things are easier in one and some things are easier in the other.

It shouldn't be doing that - at least not with a (fairly) low level command to set 
this mode. The only 
exception to this that I can think of is altering a table structure... and then MI 
will ask you if data is 
going to be possibly lost or mutated.
