I have had really good success copying and pasting the map window (and
legends) to MS Powerpoint and then if I want them in another format,
e.g., gif, etc, I save as a gif, jpeg, or metafile out of Powerpoint.
The downside is it is the map window so "not layout pretty!"  But quite
functional so far.  Good luck.
