I and at least one other have reported this to MapInfo Tech Support - they
acknowledge that it's their bug. Importing a shape file that is in any US
Survey Feet projection is a problem. Fiddling with Mapinfow.prj cannot cure
the problem.
They have a work around until they post a patch:
1. Import the shape file as non-earth projection
2. Save As... Select a new name, and specify the proper projection.
I've not tried this yet, but they say it works

We, too, have experienced problems using Universal Translator and

ShapeLink v.1.1, which successfully translated the Shapefiles we

course that doesn't help if you're attempting translation from other
formats.
If anyone else is having problems, please let MapInfo know so they
treat it
as a bug that affects a significant enough number of customers to

about. And they should be worried - without a workable Universal
Translator
many of us would have no option but to trudge with the juggernaut:
ESRI.
Overall we've been pleased with MapInfo, and MapInfo's response on
this
board to issues we've raised, or participated in, such as modifying
the
Scalebar tool. Let's hope they pay attention to this one - it's
critical to
the work we do.
