Glad that I can contribute something to this list, after folks have been
so helpful with some of my questions/problems.
I have done 'heads-up digitizing' but it took special instructions from a
colleague, since the MapInfo manual (at least for MapInfo 3.0) is worse
than useless--it is misleading, causing me to waste a lot of time.
Here's what I do:
1. Scan a map and save it in some bitmap format --and call it
something like mymap.bmp
2. For the first time the map is read into MapInfo:
File-open table-File type=raster-[mymap.bmp]-ok
3. register the map: [Image-registration box ==> projection,
category=non-earth; members=non-earth inches]-ok
NOTE: When you click on projection box the
first time you call this image in, you should get a box asking "Do you
want to simply display the image or register it"; if you don't get this
message, you are in 'trouble' and would be advised to re-boot the machine.
Also, it is important to give the projection BEFORE you register the three
sets of coordinates requested, or weird things happen
4. click with the mouse in a corner of your map image, creating pt1.
Then type
in mapx and mapy coordinate points using the units given in the imagex
and imagey boxes. Do this for three points around the edges of the
map-ok.
5. You have now registered the map, and can proceed to edit it any way
you wish. Make the Cosmetic layer editable, and use the polygon or
whatever tools to create objects on that layer.
6. In subsequent runs, it is important to open the original (scanned) map
table before opening up any other tables. If you don't, the others may
come up inverted or reversed or the mirror image of what they should be.
I found the heads-up digitizing to be quite accurate. To increase
accuracy, I simply zoomed in closer.
