it's sort of similar, but it is not "just like"
in 3.0, you can hold down the control key and click the mouse on a group of
items. if the item that gets labeled is not the one you desired to label,
then you can tap the z key, and that label will go away, and you can click
the mouse again, and since you have the ctrl key down, then a different item
will be labeled. If you keep doing this long enough, then you will eventally
get the label you want.
in 4+ you can't undo a label and you have to move the mouse and start over
and you may not ever be able to get the label you want. furthermore, the
.mbx redraws the whole screen every time you place a label, but in 3.0 no
redraw was done. i also think that the ctrl key does not cycle through
different objects with the mbx as it does with 3.0.
the auto labels introduced in version 4 are good enough for rough maps of
areas, but i find them useless for street maps in 99.9% of the cases.
if you have a whole county that you're trying to make a street map of, then
you probably want to label only particular roads for orientation purposes.
in 3.0 i could make this map in about 10 minutes for a large county, but in
4.0 this task could take sveral hours.
i have put this on every wish list that comes around, and i have also
brought it up in each beta test, but to no avail.
if mapinfo returned the 3.0 functionality in the next version, that would
get me to "upgrade"
