Well, Rich it all depends on what you compare with.
If you look at file size alone, maybe jpeg or tiffs will load faster
than a MrSID file of the same file size.
But if you look at content, that the 2 Mb MrSID file may contain the
equivalent of a 50 Mb tiff file, then MrSID is FAST! And I think that is
a fair comparison to make. Also consider that MrSID compression may
enable to to distribute (on a network or on CD) image files that never
would have been possible to handle uncompressed.
Unfortunately, the folks at Lizardtech have removed some of their better
samples, but I can provide those interested with copies, as a private
favor (under the original terms).
