If they do go down this root it will be a big pain.  Most software providers
which uses softkey codes allow you to re-register the software to a new
machine by filling in a disclaimer form.  

Since most hardware code generated by the machine is actually generated by
the operating system (P-III ID codes excepted) if you even re-install (or
upgrade) your OS you'd have to go through the re-registration loop again !
