Thanks for all the various replies I speedily received. The simplest
solution I tried was to open a new workspace, open the Access database
(*.mdb) with the same name, overwriting the old *.tab file. Then I closed
that workspace & reopened the original workspace. Problem solved. 
It is the new field that caused was causing the problem and this basically
rewrites the definition of the Access table that MapInfo is working with.
