Mitch, because you can change the utilisation of space by zooming
I presume that the under-utilisation is inside your map frame.

I usually work with MI and the map windows all maximised

This works fine for landscape layouts where I simply use the
mouse and zoom button on the "Main" toolbar to include the
area I want. These come out pretty close to the aforementioned
landscape sheet.

I have much more difficulty with portrait layouts and to get accurate
zooms, I will often "Restore" windows inside MI and then adjust my
map window to the aproximate shape of a portrait sheet - on my machine
this is the full height and about half the width of the maximised MI window.

Then I use the same map zoom technique to fill the mapper window but
often need to make minor adjustments.

This works for me because I my work concentrates on one area
and the maps are sub-areas within that area. It usually doesn't matter if
features
outside the area of interest fill the remainder of the mapping sheet.

Naturally, if I have an area that does not roughly match the shape of my
print media (eg. a map of New Zealand, which is too long to fill the breadth
of an A4 portrait sheet), I will have unutilised area either side of it.
Likewise, unless
I am using square print media, a square map area will leave gaps, either
side in
landscape or above and below in portrait.

With luck there is something you can use in this ramble....

Subject: MI Utilising Space on Layout

Good afternoon all,

Can anyone help me with utilising the space on my Layout.

Whenever I click on Window>New Layout Window I never manage to get the map
to utilise all of the space in the Layout. Consequently I get a small map on
a large layout with lots of white around the map.

I have a map of a state and am trying to utilise the space by manually
changing the Zoom on my Map Window then seeing the effect through the New
Layout command. This does improve the situation somewhat but this is very
time consuming.

"There's gotta be a better way" that saves time (I hope).

Can anyone assist?

Thanks in Advance
